Olomouc

Olomouc has one hundred and three thousand inhabitants. Due to its rich history, university, culture and crafts traditions is Olomouc one of the most important cities in the Czech Republic. Olomouc is in central location in Morava. That is why Olomouc has been an attractive location for tourists, merchants and business-people. At present it is said that Olomouc is student’s city because of Palacky University.

Olomouc is the second largest protected area in Czech Republic. Eleven years ago was the Holy Trinity Column officially registered on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.

Location

The city of Olomouc lies in the valley of the Morava river. Elevated geographical features in the west and, mainly, in the east form the boundary of lowland surrounding the city. The city itself is thus closed in a drawn-out depression opened to the northwest and to the southeast. The local climate is moderate.

Basic history

Its history dates back to the 10th century AD when it became an important trade crossing-point. After Prague it has the second most significant collection of historical monuments in the country. The second oldest university in the Czech Republic was founded in Olomouc in the year 1573. Olomouc was considered the capital of Moravia from the Luxembourgian period up till the 17th century. During the Thirty Years War when Olomouc was occupied by the Swedish army, the town was destroyed to a large extent and lost its leading position.

At present

The city is experiencing major development in the areas of culture, accommodation, food, dining and tourism. It has a great deal to offer both socially and culturally, with visits to the Moravian Theatre, concerts of the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, exhibitions at the Museum of Natural Science and the Museum of Art along with a whole range of art galleries. In addition, tourists can visit the ZOO on Svaty Kopecek (The Holy Hill).

Getting there

The easiest way to reach Olomouc from Prague is to take a train from the Main Railway Station - Hlavni Nadrazi. If you arrive to Czech Republic by plane, you will need to get from the Prague airport to the Main Railway Station. The airport is connected with the city by many regular bus links. To get to the centre, take bus No. 119 from the airport to Dejvická metro station, from where you take the underground line A to the centre stations Můstek or Muzeum. There you can transfer to line C and take the underground to the station Hlavni Nadrazi (Main Railway Station).

You can also take special Airport Express bus (AE) that goes from the airport through Dejvicka directly to the Main Railway Station (Hlavni Nadrazi). To see the timetable and prizes of the Airport Express, please see this page.

From Hlavni Nadrazi you can take a train to Olomouc. The journey from Prague to Olomouc lasts around 3 hours.
