Incomings :: Pilsen :: City

Why to come to Pilsen?
Pilsen is the city of beer, cultural events, parties, but also monuments, museums etc. We promise you, that you will not be bored or annoyed if you come here. The contact persons always do their best to ensure a rich social programme, to organise interesting trips and to make sure that everything during your exchange runs smoothly. Almost the whole social programme is paid by the Deanery of our faculty.

The University Hospital is one of the best equipped medical establishments in the Czech Republic and is the biggest hospital in our country. The tutors are very pleasant and IFMSA CZ Pilsen has a long tradition in cooperation with them. Therefore they try very hard to make the exchange for the incoming students as interesting as possible.

Getting to Pilsen
Pilsen lies about 80 km southwest from Prague and about 80 km from the German border. The easiest way to get to Pilsen is to go by bus. The are links from Zlicin Bus terminal approx. once an hour. To get to Zlicin, take bus No. 100, a special fast and frequent service from the airport to Zlicin.

At Zlicin Bus station, there is a stop of big yellow buses of company STUDENT AGENCY. The ticket to go to Pilsen costs 90 crowns (about 3,75 EUR). And it's even a bit cheaper if you have an ISIC card.

You can also go by train, there are trains going to Pilsen from Prague Main Railway Station every hour. Unfortunately, the train ticket is much more expensive, it costs approx. 175 crowns (7 EUR) and the quality of the transportation isn't very satisfying. What is more, the railway station is further away from the airport than the Zlicin Bus station.

General info about Pilsen
-Pilsen is the 4th largest city in the Czech Republic located in Western Bohemia. It has a population of about 165,000 inhabitants. There is plenty of monuments in Pilsen - e.g. historical centre with gothic St. Bartholomew?s Cathedral, mysterious historical underground, renaissance City Hall, Great Synagogue, city theatre and museum. The city centre is surrounded by a big park. Obviously, we can't forget the huge number of pubs with famous Pilsner beer and delicious Czech cuisine, shopping malls, cinemas and as Pilsen candidates for the European City of Culture in year 2015, there is a rich variety of cultural events throughout the whole year.

The IFMSA CZ Pilsen usually organises trips for the exchange students to Prague, Karlovy Vary, Český Krumlov, Brno or even abroad (Auschwitz, Cracow, Wien, Berlin, Budapest etc.). The trips are organised according to students' desires.

Social programme (pubs and clubs)

The PUB -
a unique bar with a self-service tap on every table. You don't have to ask the staff every time you want to get a beer, you just fill up your glass yourself (this pub was founded by a student from our medical school). There are two PUBs in Pilsen, one is non-smoker and the other one is an ordinary PUB where it is allowed to smoke. On the wall of every PUB in the Czech republic (there is 9 of them), there is a big screen showing the amount of beer drank at every table in the PUB network in the Czech republic. For instance, it means that you can compete with unknown people in the PUBs in Prague, in Brno or in Hradec Kralove.

PH+ club - One of the glamorous clubs in Pilsen. Every Friday and Saturday a disco takes place there, during the week the club is quite a nice place for a bit of having fun. The entrance for all the events in this club is free of charge. Unfortunately, this club doesn't serve the beer from Pilsen. On the other hand, it serves Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, Leffe or Bellevue Kriek.

Nekonecny Sum
- A club very much popular among the medical students in Pilsen. Very good athmosphere, cheap drinks, pleasant staff and good music, what to want more? Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings are like created to be spent here.

Public transport
The IFMSA CZ Pilsen will provide you after your arrival with a card that entitles you to use Pilsen public transportation without restraint. The only thing you've got to do is to have always your passport or ID with you, so that you can prove that the card you get from us really belongs to you. There are tramways, buses and trolley-buses that perform public transport in Pilsen. The public transport system in Pilsen is very good and very easy to use.
