Charles University is the oldest university in central Europe and north from Alps. King Charles founded Charles University in 1348. At present, Charles University consists of 17 faculties of which five are faculties of medicine. Three of them (1st Faculty of Medicine, 2nd Faculty of Medicine and 3rd Faculty of Medicine) are located in Prague, one is in Hradec Kralove and one is in Pilsen (Plzen).
Hradec Kralove is a home of five university faculties: the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Charles University, the Military Medical Academy and the University of Hradec Kralove with Faculty of Education, Faculty of Informatics and Management).
Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove started their education in 1945 as the first university in East Bohemia. It offers Undergraduate study programs (General Medicine and Dentistry, also in English language for international students) and Postgraduate study programs. Over eight hundred students study General medicine in Czech language and two hundred students study in the English language, counted in all years. One hundred seventy in Czech and sixty in English study dentistry.
At present the University Hospital Hradec Kralove ranks among the most significant health facilities in the Czech Republic. It serves as a centre of the highest level for a large area populated by up to approx. 1,000,000 residents and many departments attract patients from the entire Czech Republic. The hospital is an important centre of training for physicians and secondary school educated medical workers.
Every year, about 42,000 patients are admitted to 21 clinics with about 1,500 beds and approximately 660,000 patients are treated as outpatients. The hospital employs over 3,800 workers, of which 2,800 are in medical occupations, including 520 physicians. A number of doctors engaged in the University Hospital Hradec Kralove hold important positions in specialised medical societies of the CZ, several are members of foreign professional companies and are successful also in the field of medical research.
The hospital together with the Medical Faculty of Charles University annually organises a number of important gatherings of physicians on national as well as international levels and uses for these events the city of Hradec Kralove, which has become one of the congress centres of the Czech Republic.
Modern hospital medical care has been developing successfully in Hradec Kralove since the end of the 19th century, but the academic roots of today’s University Hospital Hradec Kralove date back to the 1930s.
