Hradec Kralove is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in East Bohemia. It is located in the lowland plain of the river, Labe. It is about 100km away from the capital city, Prague. The town lays at the confluence of two rivers - the Labe and the Orlice rivers. With the population of almost 100, 000 inhabitants, the city is ranked among ten of the Czech’s largest cities. Around Hradec Kralove (within reach of 30 to 50 km) there are a lot of other historical monuments, especially many beautiful castles, and the famous Krkonose- Giant Mountains (with the Natural Reservation) are approx. 80 km far from the town.
The history of the city stretch beck to medieval times and its beginning dates back to year 1225. Hradec Kralove was at that time the royal fortress town and had already become the centre of East Bohemia in the Middle Ages. It did not loose its importance in any of the following historical periods, for example during the Hussite movement, later as the Bishop’s seat, as a military fortress (the battle at Chlum in 1866) etc. Its unique collection of historical sights and structures consists of gothic, renaissance and baroque monuments. The city also takes pride in its modern architecture monuments from the 20th century. The masterpieces of such architects as Gocar or Kotera and others contributed greatly to gaining the title The Salon of the Republic.
Hradec Kralove is a town of extraordinarily colourful highlights. There are several cultural institutions, e.g. the Klicpera Theatre, Philharmonic Orchestra, and lots of other artistic bodies a number of music festivals take places here.
It is also a home of five university faculties: the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Charles University, the Military Medical Academy and the University of Hradec Kralove with Faculty of Education, Faculty of Informatics and Management).
Hradec Kralove is also an important centre of sport. There are sports areas with modern facilities in town e. g. the sports stadiums, the winter stadium with two ice rinks, sports fields, modern tennis courts LTC, etc.
Hradec Kralove has always been known for its care of parks, orchards and gardens. There are also woods, forest parks, ponds, even a state nature reservation, all these providing the means for recreation and rest.

International Airport Praha-Ruzyne is the air gateway to the Czech Republic. To get from Prague to Hradec, it is possible to take both trains (from the main railway station - HLAVNI NADRAZI) and bus (from the main bus station FLORENC).
There are many options for getting to and from Prague Airport. You have a choice between personal transport solutions, private shuttle services, taxis or public bus services.
Take this line A up to the crossing with line C (MUZEUM station) and change to line C in direction to FLORENC station. The first stop in this direction is HLAVNI NADRAZI = Main railway station. The second station after "HLAVNI NÁDRAZI" is bus station FLORENC. When you get off at the station FLORENC, take the first turn right (designated AUTOBUSOVE NADRAZI ODJEZDY AUTOBUSU) and you will come directly to the bus station platforms (most buses heading for Hradec Kralove leave from platform No. 14).
It takes about 1 - 2 hours both by train and bus to Hradec Kralove. Both the railway station and the bus station in Hradec Kralove are right in the centre of the town, opposite to Hotel Amber. To look up the schedule of either trains or buses connecting Prague and Hradec, you can go to www.idos.cz. There is also an English version and it is reliable.
All passengers are obligated to validate the (non-transfer) tickets, which are only valid for one travel, immediately after boarding the bus or trolley. Inspectors check tickets and you will be given a penatly for 1000 CZK if you do not posses a valid ticket. Tickets can be purchased at newsagents or at any bus or trolley driver. A single ticket typically costs 15 CZK (if you buy the ticket in the bus, it is more expensive).
You can use "city card", which works on the electronic system. This system began at the beginning of 2006. You can buy this card for 150 CZK, but we only recommend this card only if you are staying for a long period of time. This card has some advantages and also disadvantages; you will spend less money travelling around and will not have to worry about constantly validating tickets. However, But the card must be purchased for 150 CZK.
Hradec Kralove is a pleasant city, where the hospital, faculty, and dormitory are easy to access on foot. The town is full of verdant well kept parks and walking trials, therefore it is pleasurable to travel on foot.
You may take a taxi or municipal transportation number 2, 6, 7 to get to the Faculty (Simkova street 870). The Fakulty of medicine building, Simkova street is to be found at the fourth bus/ trolleybus stop called "Magistrat mesta" just behind the building of the "Magistrat mesta" on the left hand side.
Take a public transportation number 2, 18, 27 and get off at the third bus/trolleybus stop called "Magistrat mesta". You can also go on foot, it takes about 20 minutes.
You can travel by municipal transportation number 1, 9, 28 and get off at "Fakultni nemocnice".
Firstly you can go on foot, hospital is really close to your accommodation. Go out of youth hostel, turn to the left and continue straight ahead. In few minutes you can see University Hospital. Take a public transportation number 1, 28 and get off at "Fakultni nemocnice".
Take a municipal transportation number 1, 2, 28 and get off at bus/trolley stop called "Hotel Garni". Go over the road and turn to the left. You will see four same buildings, this is our youth hostel.
